Glencoe Mike Popelka Show

This past weekend, June 6 through 8, was the 2nd annual Mike Popelka Memorial Car, Bike and Tractor Show in Glencoe, Minnesota. The show was held in conjunction with the annual Glencoe Days celebration in the city. Events were being held throughout Glencoe with most of the activities either downtown or at Oak Leaf Park. A threat of severe weather was in the forecast but, fortunately, never materialized. Participants enjoyed a great summer weekend.

The Mike Popelka Memorial Car, Bike and Tractor Show is held in honor of local resident and mechanic Mike Popelka, who died tragically in 2006. Classic cars and motorcycles line the streets of downtown Glencoe, with a large parking area for tractors. An evening cruise was held on Friday night, and a tractor parade on Saturday, both followed by live music. Awards are presented for best paint and for the people's choice-- voted on by those in attendance. The show also featured members of the University of Minnesota football team signing autographs and a burn-out event with plenty of horsepower and smoke.

The show was held during Glencoe Days, which provided numerous additional events throughout town. Bingo, pedal tractor pulls, lawn mower races, and softball and mud volleyball tournaments occurred throughout the weekend. There was plenty of food and the town parade on Sunday afternoon. The total number of vehicles seemed to be down a bit, perhaps due to either fuel prices or the threat of weather. For those who made it, however, it was a great show and an excellent weekend.
