Taking engine power, torque, durability, and fuel economy to higher levels of performance, John Deere introduces the new PowerTech Plus 9.0L Engine for use in the new 8030 Series Tractors.

"The PowerTech Plus engines are John Deere designed to fully integrate and to enhance the performance of the 8030 Series Tractors," says Dave Hoffman, marketing manager worldwide sales, John Deere Power Systems. "They are 11 percent larger in displacement than their predecessors and the most powerful row-crop tractor engines we have ever produced.

"They're also cleaner-burning to meet Tier 3 regulations and best-in-class for fuel efficiency. In fact, we are confident in stating that the new engines in the 8030 Series Tractors will provide a 2 percent to 5 percent reduction in fuel consumed when compared with the models they replace."

John Deere engineers were challenged to design an engine that would be cleaner burning to meet Tier 3 emissions standards and yet meet power, durability, and fuel consumption requirements for customers. They were able to accomplish this through new technology that includes a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (Cooled-EGR), and a four-valve cylinder head.

"The new six-cylinder diesel engines are rated at 2100 rpm for improved fuel economy and reduced noise," explains Hoffman. "They feature an 11 percent power bulge at 1800 rpm and a 40 percent torque rise at 1600 rpm to help the operator pull through the toughest field conditions."

New high-strength-steel pistons with directed oil cooling and a hardened steel camshaft with roller followers add to the increased durability of the engine.

"The Variable Geometry Turbocharger is quite an innovation in engine performance," says Hoffman. "The VGT is designed with variable turbine inlet vanes that adjust according to power requirements. At low speeds and high loads the inlet vanes close to a narrow position to increase boost and power; at high speeds and lower loads, the vanes open for increased efficiency. This translates into an extremely efficient system that adjusts infinitely to power requirements in the field."

Cooled-EGR mixes cooled exhaust gas with the intake air. This innovative design lowers combustion temperatures by reducing oxygen and controls emissions without retarding injection timing. The bottom line is that Cooled-EGR enables the engine to meet Tier 3 regulations without degrading performance or increasing fuel consumption.

"We've also designed a four-valve cylinder head that improves overall engine air flow for higher, low-speed torque and quicker response to tough field conditions," says Hoffman. "A center-mounted fuel injector enhances performance, and the end result is more power and torque with better fuel economy."

The engines also feature a new fuel filter system with Auto-Prime. This design eliminates hand priming and filter prefilling when changing filters. A fuel pressure sensor alerts the operator when a filter change is needed.

"The PowerTech Plus 9.0L Engine is a world-class performer with more power and durability, better fuel efficiency, and a cleaner-burning design, and it's fully integrated for top performance with the 8030 Series Tractors," summarizes Hoffman. "We encourage customers to contact their local John Deere dealer for a demonstration as soon as these tractors are available in their trade area. They can see for themselves the exceptional power and performance they'll receive from these new engines."
