The Swaraj tractor design began as a project of the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), an agency of the Indian government that develops indigenous product designs. Punjab Tractor purchased this design in 1970, and began to mass-produce the tractors. Punjab has now developed its own tractors designs, for sale in both India and worldwide.
