Massey Ferguson introduces low profile 400 series tractors

The popular Massey Ferguson 400 Series tractor line is now even more versatile with the introduction of four new low profile models. The MF 471 (60 PTO hp), MF 481 (70 PTO hp), MF 491 (77 PTO hp) and MF 492 (85 PTO hp) tractors were designed specifically to meet the needs of orchard and vineyard applications, but fit equally well into other situations where height is limited.

"These versatile tractors are not only lower, but more compact all around to fit into tight, restricted height situations, whether orchard, vineyard or chicken barn," says Denis Alize, general marketing manager, utility and specialty tractors, Massey Ferguson. "We re-engineered the ROPS, redesigned the fenders and even downsized the steering wheel to shave precious inches off tractor height. These changes also enhanced stability and traction needed in these challenging conditions."

Relocating the exhaust system on the low profile models from vertical to horizontal and from above the hood to beneath the operator’s platform chopped as much as 45 inches from the standard profile, depending on model. Design changes, such as lowering the fold-point of the ROPS and reducing the diameter of the steering wheel, further lowered the profile. Smaller diameter wheel offerings not only shortened the profile, but also lowered the center of gravity.

"Shorter front axle spindles on two-wheel models give them a lower stance and more stability," says Taylor Grout, sales engineer, Massey Ferguson. "Special rear wheel and tire options can help lower the profile even more."

It is not just the low profile that makes these models well suited for specialty uses. Two four-position hydraulic valves, with kickout and float as standard equipment, make these tractors even more responsive and thus better suited to the needs of high value crop producers.

Other design changes include moving to clamshell rear fenders. They not only reduce the tractor height, but also give it a slimmer profile for getting between trees. Getting too close to trees and other obstacles can cause problems. Guardrails over fender mounted lights and forward guards to protect against fuel tank puncture have also been added.

What hasn’t changed is the well-proven durability and handling that has come to define the 400 Series. Like the rest of the 400 Series, these new low profile models are powered by Perkins 1100 Series engines, noted for their outstanding performance and for meeting offroad emissions standards. Brakes, clutch and PTO options remain the same as well.

Transmission options also remain the same on the MF 471 and MF 481. They are equipped with the 8 forward x 2 reverse as a standard transmission and with the option of an 8 forward x 8 reverse transmission, each available with optional creeper gears. The MF 491 and MF 492 are equipped with partially synchronized 12 forward x 4 reverse transmissions.

"The new low profile 400 Series tractors are the perfect fit for any operator having to work in tight quarters," says Alize. "We have shaved inches in height, added valuable features and retained those features which make the 400 Series so dependable and versatile."
