The low-rev philosophy Farmers and contractors are constantly seeking out new ways to meet the needs of cost-efficiency and rising fuel prices. In heavy trucks, manufacturers aim at economical fuel consumption with the reduced maximum operating speed of the engine. The same shift has now also been made in tractors.

Two years ago, Valtra introduced its low-rev concept in the model 8350, 135 hp. It has become Valtra’s most popular six-cylinder tractor. Customers have been especially impressed by the efficiency and the good engine pulling ability at lower revs. In the six-cylinder engine of the tractor, Valtra found an attractive concept that reduces the fuel consumption by 10% and gives a new kind of touch to driving without losing any of its productivity.

The idea was to shift down the operating speed range of the tractor by approximately 400 revs, which reduces the parasitic losses in the engine and in the transmission caused by the speed. Correspondingly, the entire power transmission of the tractor and the PTO speeds have been adapted for a lower operating speed. Model 6750 is a further developed four-cylinder version, EcoPower.

Spare yourself, save money and nature Because Valtra also manufactures its engines, it is possible to constantly develop the tractor engine features. In the EcoPower engine, the operating speed, torque and consumption have been optimised. The nominal operating speed of the four-cylinder engine is only 1800 r/min, but the torque is correspondingly 530 Nm and it is reached at the operating speed of 1150. The rated power is 105 hp and it is reached at the operating speed range of 1500-1800 r/min. Fuel consumption is approximately 10% lower than in a traditionally tuned engine.

EcoPower brings a new feeling to working. Driving is easy and fuel is saved without losing any of the productivity. In the EcoPower engine, the entire operating speed range has been shifted down. This is possible because of the modern charging and aftercooling technology. With the lower engine speed, the losses in both the engine and the transmission are smaller and the oil temperature is lower. This is particularly why the oil change interval of the engine has been safely prolonged to 500 hours. The EcoPower engine is the most cost-effective especially in changing working conditions and with partial loads. Considering the constant rises in fuel prices, the economic benefits of this engine are substantial.

With the nominal operating speed of 1800, the piston speed is only 7.2 meters per second. In a traditionally tuned engine, it is approximately 9 m/s, that is, 25 % higher. The slower operating speed range wears the engine less and thus allows long oil change intervals.

Reducing the operating speed also positively affects the noise in the engine, the transmission and the hydraulics. Even though all Valtra tractors have a low noise level, the EcoPower is a few decibels more silent - you can hear it with your plain ears. The nature of the tractor noise has also changed into a pleasant murmur. This makes it easy to use a hands-free cell phone in the cab.

The first rule in reducing the emissions is to reduce the fuel consumption. This immediately cuts the exhaust gases by 10-15 %. During a thousand operating hours, 42 litres of used engine oil is avoided.

Learn a new way of driving with Valtra’s EcoPower models The benefits of EcoPower are visible in tillage tasks, as the torque is high. In the PTO-operated machines, the engine’s capacity to maintain the selected operating speed has been praised. With a front loader, the machine can be operated at a slow engine speed, because the output of the hydraulic pump is relatively high compared to the operating speed. Also in transport work, at the speed of 40 km/h, fuel is saved and there is no stressing noise.

EcoPower requires its own driving technique. You’ll be surprised at how low of an operating speed is needed for partial loads in various tasks normal for a tractor of this size. A whole new world of driving opens up for you while working on low revs.

The output of the new 6750 EcoPower with the nominal operating speed of 1800 r/min is 105 hp, which is the most popular and most competitive tractor class in Europe. Even though the fuel consumption and the nominal operating speed are lower than in the other engines, the performance is pleasing.

As the speed of the engine drops to 1600 revs per minute, the power of the engine reaches its peak, 107 hp. The speed of 540 revs in the PTO is reached at the operating speed of 1648 r/min. The PTO speed of a thousand revs is reached with the engine speed of 1750 r/min. The engine reacts very fast to changes in the loading and well maintains the desired operating speed.

EcoPower

  • Operating speed range 900 – 1800 r/min
  • Nominal output 105 hp/1800 r/min
  • Maximum output 107 hp with the operating speed of 1600
  • Fuel consumption approximately 10 % lower than with the 2200 r/min engine of corresponding output
  • The difference grows the more the tractor is used with partial loads
  • Essentially lower noise level and a different nature of the noise
  • Long oil change interval in the engine (500 h)
  • Long service life of the engine; piston speed 25 % lower than with traditional tuning
  • Low emissions, less oil waste

Normal models also necessary The EcoPower models 6750 and 8350 that operate on the lower speed range complete Valtra’s selection. However, the ”standard models” are still necessary also. Only one low-rev version can be optimised with one cylinder displacement of the engine, whereas the normal operating speed range is needed for other power ranges. Also, Valtra’s unique turbine clutch (in models of 80-120 hp) requires a normal tuned engine. The maximum speed of the low-rev models is 40 km/h. In countries that allow the speed of 50 km/h, a tractor with a normal operating speed is faster.
