The Gravely Motor Plow Company was founded in 1922 in Charleston, North Carolina, by Benjamin Gravely. The company had a successful line of walking tractors, and entered the four-wheel garden tractor market in 1964. Gravelys used a unique rear-engine design on their tractors. Ariens purchased Gravely in 1982, and still owns the brand. The Gravely name was dropped from garden tractors in 2002, although it is still used on a line of commercial lawn equipment.
